Mechanical seal installation procedure for agitator

Allowable equipment parameters

Shaft run out: 0.08 mm maximum.
Pad plate squareness: 0.08 mm maximum.
Concentricity of pad plate bore: 0.13 mm maximum.
End play: 0.10 mm maximum.

Precautions prior to fitting of seal
  • Do not remove the seal from package till you are ready to install on the shaft.
  • All working surfaces should be cleaned thoroughly before you start & throughout installation.
  • Do not uses hammer while fitting the seal.
Installation Procedure of mechanical seal
  • Remove sharp edges, burrs from key ways & grooves on shaft.
  • Maintain surface finish 0.8 micron or better Ra Value.
  • The ovality should be within maximum 0.025 mm.
  • Carefully check the pad plate for the seal. Remove any foreign matter & see the surfaces are smooth and flat.
  • Check shaft diameter is within the limits given on the General arrangement drawing.
  • Assemble shaft. Check run out does not exceed 0.08 mm.
  • Check seal pad squareness to within 0.08 mm.
  • Check shaft is concentric to location diameter to within 0.13 mm maximum.
  • Check bearing for clearance & ensure that that this does not exceed beyond limits.
  • Check shaft finish at O-ring location & check it is free from scratch or burr.
  • Assemble O-rings in the sleeve of the cartridge seal.
  • Place the gasket on the pad plate.
  • Assemble seal cartridge on the pad plate.  Apply clean compatible oil/liquid to the shaft & gently pass the shaft along with lantern & bearing housing from top side through seal cartridge.
  •  Tighten the cartridge to pad plate by stud, nuts or bolts.
  • Tighten the socket set screws fully to clamp the drive collar to the sleeve. Tighten the bolts fully. This will clamp drive collars and collar together.
  • Tighten the socket set screws fully to the shaft.
  • Assemble Gear box, motor, Bottom coupling & bottom shaft.
  • Carry out necessary circulation & cooling piping connections. Ensure that piping joints are leak proof. Ensure seal area is properly vented.
  • Slide out the sliding washers so as to clear the slots in the sleeve. Tighten the hex. bolts completely to avoid falling of sliding washers and rubbing on the sleeve in running condition.
Precautions while removing the seals from equipment
  • Flush/neutralize the seal area, if necessary for hazardous/toxic/flammable/corrosive nature of the product.
  • Before any action to be taken for removal, first slide the sliding washers and engage them in the groove on the sleeve firmly. Tighten the bolts fully.
  • Remove the Bottom shaft, bottom coupling, Motor, gear box& lantern along with shaft. Remove seal cartridge from pad plate. Seal removed in undamaged condition will retain the evidences on failed parts.
