What is vibration?

Vibration is the oscillation (periodic back-and-forth motion) of an object about a static position. Example of vibration is a weight suspended from a spring.

Vibrations fall into two categories: free and forced. Free vibrations occur when the system is disturbed momentarily and then allowed to move without restraint.

Vibration is measured with an accelerometer. An accelerometer is a device that is securely attached by some means to a surface and produces an electrical signal which is proportional to the surface acceleration. This signal is measured by a meter and it can be expressed in terms of acceleration, velocity, or displacement.
